Ocean Tupuna
We are a Cook Islands–based NGO dedicated to catalyzing marine regeneration across our islands
Inspired by the wisdom of our Tupuna (ancestors), we work alongside our largest and smallest island communities, traditional leaders, scientists, and youth, to restore and protect the ocean ecosystems that sustain our people and way of life.
Empower genuine stewardship
Through reef restoration, knowledge sharing, and community-led stewardship, Ocean Tupuna supports a future where the Moana thrives, both today, and for many generations to come.
Our Sister Initiatives
Ocean Tupuna works alongside its sister initiatives, each nurturing a different relationship between our people and the ocean.
• Ocean Toa
Ocean Toa is a responsible turtle tour initiative on our capital island of Rarotonga, offering respectful encounters with sea turtles.
Ocean Toa ensure activities protect marine life and contribute directly back to ocean conservation and community regeneration efforts.
• Ocean Ancestors
Ocean Ancestors is an international partner supporting the revival and sharing of ancestral ocean knowledge, helping connect Indigenous wisdom and modern science to strengthen marine stewardship across communities.
• Ocean Tamariki
Ocean Tamariki is a youth-focused initiative that inspires and educates children about marine ecosystems, nurturing the next generation of ocean guardians through hands-on learning and connection to the moana.
Our Partners
Ocean Tupuna collaborates with leading global organisations to accelerate marine regeneration across the Cook Islands.
Through partnerships with groups such as the Great Barrier Reef Foundation and Moshun Earth, Ocean Tupuna connects local action in with international expertise in coral restoration, conservation science, and community-led ocean stewardship.
These collaborations enable the sharing of knowledge, technology, and restoration approaches that strengthen reef resilience, and perpetuate strong livelihoods for our local communities.
